Awesome! Why Does The Colosseum Have Holes

Its clearly understandable why so many call the Colosseum Swiss Cheese. A simple and quick answer is it was being robbed for its hidden materials after the population of Rome declined and structures like the Colosseum went into disuse.

It was too expensive to make the entire building of marble so it was used only to beautify the outside of the edifice and certain areas of the interior as well.

Why does the colosseum have holes. Originally its face or outer shell was finely carved marble. Numerous cavities are noticed all over the place. But why does the Colosseum have these holes.

The holes you see now are what anchored the marble slabs to the skeletal walls which were themselves made of cheaper stone brick and mortar much as a house today might have. What you see of the Colosseum today is really only its skeleton.
