In John 17 Jesus prays for his disciples in the first century and for future disciples after his death and resurrection. Rather He was primarily thinking about those who did and would believe in Him. Jesus prayed because of His relationship with the Father.

Jesus great love and concern for them is made obvious in the prayer we just read.
